Understanding FAFSA

(online, interactive, multilingual guide to financial aid for ALL students and families)

NYC College and Career Planning Community,

We’re excited to announce the launch of the Understanding FAFSA website - a new-and-improved, interactive and multilingual online orientation to all things FAFSA (and financial aid of all kinds).

FAFSA completion is strongly associated with postsecondary enrollment - and talking about affordability with a trusted adult increases likelihood of completion by 700%! Please use this guide (which includes information on working with undocumented, homeless, and immigrant students) to inform your practice - and share it far and wide!

FAFSA completion has declined across the country in the last two years and indeed year-to-date completion in NYC appears to be lagging. Those positive results from talking with students couldn’t matter more than they do right now, and we’re using all our resources to join you in starting those conversations in the next few weeks:

·         Texting the Understanding FAFSA site to students through Next Steps Texts

·         Refreshing our parent-facing videos on Parent University

·         Producing self-guided professional learning for school based teams

·         Sharing high impact training opportunities like this series about supporting undocumented students

Good news: CUNY applications are trending higher than last year. Let’s make sure those applicants have all the financial resources they can access to afford the pathways they’re pursuing!
