The Matthew Nierenberg

“Heart of Gold”

Scholarship

Matthew Nierenberg was born on April 23rd 1990, and lived every moment of his life to the fullest until his passing on July 8th 2008.  Matt brought an extraordinary amount of happiness into so many people’s lives, despite his short time here with us.  Matthew was the person that ignited a room with his smile upon entering, a smile so prominent that you could actually feel how happy he was just by looking into his eyes.  Matthew is most remembered for making other people laugh.  All you needed was 2 minutes in his presence and you now possessed a memory of great euphoria that would last a lifetime.  Matt’s lightheartedness even made you feel more alive. He was the person to brighten the mood even on the most somber of days.  Matthew graduated from Tottenville in June of 2008, and was set to leave for U.S Navy Boot camp early 2009.  All Matthew wanted to do was help someone else in need, or make someone laugh.  We want Matt to be remembered, not only the person he was, but continue the legacy of the type of person he would have continued to be.

Enclosed Please find a copy of the application as well as a list of criteria for applying for this scholarship.  The award itself will be in the amount of $1500 - $2000.

All submissions will be reviewed, and then narrowed down to a few students who will meet with Matthew’s brothers to determine the one student that they believe truly captures the cheerful disposition of Matthew.  The award will not be based upon educational merit, financial need, or community service.  It will be awarded to the applicant that brings the most cheerfulness into another person’s life and or lives.

Competed applications should be returned to the College Office, Rm. A101, no later than 4/8/2022 at 9 am.

Understanding FAFSA

(online, interactive, multilingual guide to financial aid for ALL students and families)

NYC College and Career Planning Community,

We’re excited to announce the launch of the Understanding FAFSA website - a new-and-improved, interactive and multilingual online orientation to all things FAFSA (and financial aid of all kinds).

FAFSA completion is strongly associated with postsecondary enrollment - and talking about affordability with a trusted adult increases likelihood of completion by 700%! Please use this guide (which includes information on working with undocumented, homeless, and immigrant students) to inform your practice - and share it far and wide!

FAFSA completion has declined across the country in the last two years and indeed year-to-date completion in NYC appears to be lagging. Those positive results from talking with students couldn’t matter more than they do right now, and we’re using all our resources to join you in starting those conversations in the next few weeks:

·         Texting the Understanding FAFSA site to students through Next Steps Texts

·         Refreshing our parent-facing videos on Parent University

·         Producing self-guided professional learning for school based teams

·         Sharing high impact training opportunities like this series about supporting undocumented students

Good news: CUNY applications are trending higher than last year. Let’s make sure those applicants have all the financial resources they can access to afford the pathways they’re pursuing!
